Mexico Food Supplement Regulatory Process: COFEPRIS Guide and Growth Outlook towards 2040

Mexico’s Food Supplement market reached approximately USD 2.9 billion in 2025 and is forecast to reach USD 5.6 billion by 2034, reflecting a CAGR of 7.38. This strong trajectory highlights continued opportunities towards 2040 for international Consumer Health companies.

Mexico Food Supplement Market Entry Requires Careful Classification

Food Supplements in Mexico do not require sanitary registration in the same way as medicines. However, COFEPRIS requires compliance with rules covering product classification, ingredients, labelling, advertising and import procedures.

COFEPRIS defines Food Supplements as products intended to increase, complement or replace components of the normal diet. They cannot be positioned to treat, cure, prevent or alleviate diseases. Therefore, a product marketed as a Food Supplement in Europe or the US may require adaptation before entering Mexico.

Four Regulatory Checks Can Determine Market Access

International companies should assess:

  • Formulation and ingredients: botanicals, vitamins, minerals and other substances must comply with Mexican requirements.
  • Claims: therapeutic, weight-loss or disease-related claims can trigger objections or a different product classification.
  • Packaging and labelling: mandatory statements, wording and promotional messages must comply locally.
  • Import procedures: imported Food Supplements require the relevant sanitary import process and supporting documentation.

COFEPRIS reported 3,617 applications for prior sanitary import permits for Food Supplements, with 82.88% receiving a favourable resolution.

Local COFEPRIS Expertise Can Reduce Regulatory Risk

Mexico is digitalizing regulatory procedures, but practical challenges remain. There are approximately 10,000 applications submitted under the previous COFEPRIS system remained pending. Without local regulatory experience, classification questions, documentation gaps and authority interaction can slow market entry.

Chameleon Pharma combines 20+ years of healthcare experience with an established local network in Mexico and Latin America. Mexico Food Supplement Market Outlook towards 2040

Looking towards 2040, Mexico is expected to remain one of Latin America’s most attractive Consumer Health markets. If Food Supplement market maintains the current projected CAGR of 7.38%, the market could grow from approximately USD 2.9 billion in 2025 to around USD 8.4 billion by 2040. However, capturing this potential requires a well-prepared regulatory and market entry strategy.
