Thailand & Vietnam Rx & OTC Market: USD 30.5B by 2040

Thailand and Vietnam’s combined Rx & OTC market could exceed USD 30.5 billion by 2040. For Consumer Health companies, the opportunity is significant, but success depends on navigating different regulatory routes, importer requirements and pharmacy channels.

Thailand Consumer Health and Vietnam OTC Market Growth

Thailand’s total Rx & OTC market could reach approximately USD 14.11 billion by 2040, including an OTC opportunity of around USD 2.54 billion. The market benefits from high healthcare coverage, an aging population, growing self-care awareness, and an established pharmacy-chain landscape.

Vietnam could become the larger of the two markets, reaching approximately USD 16.43 billion by 2040, including USD 3.61 billion in OTC sales. With more than 100 million consumers, widespread self-medication and the continued importance of independent pharmacies, Vietnam offers significant Consumer Health potential. Imported products are also often favored, while modern pharmacy chains and e-commerce continue to develop.

Together, both markets could therefore exceed USD 30.5 billion in Rx & OTC sales by 2040, including more than USD 6.1 billion in OTC sales. However, capturing this growth requires more than choosing an attractive market: regulatory routes, importer requirements and pharmacy-channel structures differ between the two countries.

ASEAN Harmonisation Still Requires Country-Specific Registration

ASEAN harmonisation supports common technical requirements and the ASEAN Common Technical Dossier for drug registration, alongside regional requirements for Health Supplements. Market authorization, however, remains country-specific.

In Thailand, the Thai FDA requires the relevant drug facility or import license before product registration. Registration dossiers can follow ACTD or ICH CTD formats. While Vietnam applies its national registration framework through the Drug Administration of Vietnam (DAV).

Before launch, pharma and OTC companies should therefore assess:

  • Product classification and the applicable registration route.
  • Claims, labelling and promotional requirements.
  • Local importer or registration-holder responsibilities.
  • Distributor and pharmacy-channel suitability.

Pharmacy Channels in Southeast Asia Require Local Execution

Vietnam’s pharmacy market remains highly fragmented. An Asia-Pacific analysis estimates that independent drugstores still represent around 80% of the market, while larger national pharmacy chains and e-commerce channels continue to develop.

Thailand combines community pharmacies, modern pharmacy chains and hospital dispensing. The optimal route to market therefore depends on product category, positioning, target consumers and local partner capabilities.

2040 Outlook: Connecting Regulation with Pharmacy Strategy

By 2040, Thailand and Vietnam together could represent more than USD 30 billion in Rx & OTC sales, making both markets increasingly relevant for OTC, Food Supplements and broader Consumer Health portfolios.

Companies that evaluate regulatory feasibility together with channel structures and partner capabilities can prioritize stronger country-product combinations and avoid unnecessary launch delays.
